The fairy-tale greenhouse
The forest, as a multitude of mysterious living spaces. As a place of transformation. As a metaphor for the twilight zone between being deported and being welcome. Forest, as a place of trial, where you have neither overview nor orientation. Where it comes down to plasticity and creativity to be able to ground in an alien environment. In the middle of the forest is a greenhouse. A little house made out of glass as a symbol of life in a refugee centre. In a new house you can learn to feel at home again, but how can you do that when the walls are made of glass? What does privacy entail? Where does the boundary lie between protection and imprisonment? I built the greenhouse together with the residents and personnel of St. Elisabeth House. In the windows, we engraved fairy-tales and stories from each person’s home country, in which forests had a prominent role. The fairy-tale greenhouse uses the most subtle language to reveal the meaning of forests in myths and legends from all over the world.Opdrachtgever: Red Cross Belgium, i.c.w. residents and personnel of refugee centre St. Elisabeth House, Manderfeld.
