AIR Scala
During 2011, I was invited for one year to be artist in residence, in the Scala apartment building, a large modern block of flats in the Kolenkit neighbourhood of Amsterdam. I resided in the building for one day per week, to get to know the inhabitants and learn about their stories and passions. I was looking for special ‘treasures’ that would glisten like a ‘Scalaidoscope’. Soon I realized that the inhabitants hardly knew each other. This was because of the scale of the building, and also due to its social structure. It contains both privately owned apartments and apartments which are rented under the social housing conditions. There is also a number care homes. The building is accessible by six different entrances. From my previous experiences with the CIRC/US project, I knew that clowns would be able to break the ice. I portrayed various residents wearing a clown’s nose in the spirit of: ‘Lets let our hair down’. Precisely because of the mask, people dared to reveal themselves. Simultaneously, I constructed a ‘crazy island’, which we had made out of 210 clown’s noses, the number of households in the block of flats, and set it afloat in the channel behind the building. The collection of surprising photographs could be seen throughout the building, and was temporarily displayed on the façade outside. They conclusively found a permanent home in the underground car park.Opdrachtgever: West City District Council, Amsterdam Fotograaf: Agnes Kappert, Ulrike Bartels
