Contemporary design for a 17th century canal house.
The Museum Van Loon, the living quarters of the regent family Van Loon is situated in the heart of the Amsterdam canal belt. In 1602 Willem van Loon co-founded the Dutch East-India Company, the V.O.C. The interior of the house still exudes the ambience of the cultural and material richness that existed in the city then. Six days a week the family opens its doors to the public, to view the house and collection.
In conjunction with the Dutch Sculptors association and Gallery Ra in Amsterdam, the Museum van Loon, invited artists and designers to make a design for a souvenir inspired by the collection and the atmosphere of the Museum.
In collaboration with Jeannette Jansen I made a series of chatelaines. In former times, a chatelaine was worn about the waist, by the mistress or the master of a large house. Useful items such as a watch, the family seal (emblem), or an important key were added to a decorative link, always within hands reach. The chatelaine transformed the whole, into a splendid piece of jewellery.
